Nellie J. Burkett

Nellie Jane Burkett, 91 of Hermitage, Formerly of Cochranton, passed away on June 27, 2018 at home surrounded by her family. Nellie was born on February 11, 1927 in McKeesport to the late Carl and Margaret Poynor Smith. She was a 1944 Graduate of McKeesport High School and went on to work as a waitress, a cook, and a clerk for Equibank. She married her husband Raymond C. Burkett Jr. on May 10, 1947, he preceded her in death on May 10, 2007 on their 60th wedding anniversary. Nellie and Ray moved to Deer Creek township in 1976 where Nellie then served as the Township Secretary. Nellie was a very faithful woman, she was a current member of New Virginia United Methodist Church in Hermitage and a past member of the Deer Creek United Methodist Church in Deer Creek Township. She loved to crochet blankets and afghans and give them away as well as making prayer shawls for her church. She loved to cook and bake as well as read. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Glassport American Legion, a member of the Rebekahs, and a bowling league. Nellie is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Coughenour and husband William of Hermitage, brother Milton Smith and wife Marjorie of Elizabeth, PA, grandchildren Amber Nellis and husband Greg of Butler, Jennifer McComb and husband Rich of Stoneboro, Jacqueline Alderson and husband Joshua of Grove City, Thomas George of Colorado, Justin George and wife Kim of Hermitage, step-grandchildren William Coughenour and fiancé Monica of Butler, and Destinee Cahoon and husband Ben of Ohio, as well as nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Nellie was preceded in death by her sons Charles Burkett and David Burkett, sister Carla May Smith, brother Walter Smith, and grandson Marcus George. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Sharon Regional Hospice for their kindness and support. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Black Funeral Home, 99 Franklin Street, Stoneboro, where family and friends are welcome from 5 pm until 8 pm on Friday, June 29, as well as from 1 pm until 2 pm on Saturday, June 30. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Saturday, June 30, at 2 pm with the Reverend Giles Bailey of Deer Creek United Methodist Church, and Reverend Mark Goswick of New Virginia United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will take place in Deer Creek Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Nellie’s name to Deer Creek UMC, PO Box 373 Cochranton, PA 16314, or New Virginia UMC, 1100 S.
