Norman N. Babcock, 94, of Meadville died Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at the Meadville Medical Center.
He was born in Palisade, CO April 30, 1910 a son of Harry J. and Hazel Naething Babcock. He married Martha Stevenson June 14, 1936 and she survives.
He was a 1930 graduate of DePauw University, Greencastle, IN with a BS in Physics. He continued to serve the DePauw as Class Agent (Fund Raiser) for 45 years. In 1992 he was elected to the DePauw University Athletic Hall of Fame for baseball.
He began his working career with Indiana Bell Telephone from 1930-1931. He then worked from 1931-1938 for the Chevrolet Commercial Body Division of GM. In 1938 he came to Meadville to Talon initially as the Cost Department Supervisor and retired in 1975 as Treasurer after 36 years with the company.
He was very active in the community, serving on the West Mead and Meadville Area School Boards (Predecessor to Crawford Central) for 13 years including one year as President, Board Member and Past President of Meadville and Western Crawford County Chamber of Commerce, one of the organizers and initial Board Member of the Meadville Area Industrial Commission, fund raiser for the building of the David Mead Inn and then a board member and treasurer, one of the organizers and first President of the Crawford County Mental Health Center, former 37 year member and past President of the Meadville Rotary Club, former board member and campaign chair of the United Way of Western Crawford Co., campaign chair for the initial phase of the present YWCA building, 53 year member of Stone United Methodist Church and 13 years as member of Stone Church Foundation, life member of Elks Lodge #219, former member and past Treasurer of the Iroquois Club, 56 year member and Past President of The Country Club, 40 year member and past Executive Committee member of Round Table, member of the Talon Management Club, Meadville Sportsman’s Club and the Crawford County Historical Society. He also loved playing golf, electric trains and baseball.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Martha of 68 years, include: one daughter, Barbara Hawes and her husband David of Fort Collins, CO; one son, Norman H. (Sandy) Babcock and his wife Sara of Meadville; five grandchildren, David Remington “Rem” Hawes, Steven Hawes, Lori Babcock, Holly Babcock and Benjamin Babcock; two great grandchildren, Morgan and Alexandra Hawes, one niece and two nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Newton S. Babcock.
There will be no calling hours.
A private family service will be officiated by the Rev. Gerald H. Murphy, retired United Methodist Clergyman.
Burial will be in Greendale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Meadville Public Library, 848 N. Main St., Meadville, Meadville Area Youth Baseball and Softball, c/o Bill Dithrich, 10561 Pettis Road, Meadville, PA 16335 or a charity of the donor’s choice.
