P. Clayton Wygant, 98, of Meadville, died Friday, February 26, 1971, at Flickinger's Convalescent Home, where he had been a patient since January 15, 1971. He had been in failing health for the past year.
He was born at Deckards Run, Wayne Township, December 15, 1872, a son of Andrew J and Hannah Barnes Wygant. He was the last survivor of eleven children. On June 15, 1895, he married the former Stella Record. She died in 1903. He then married Patty Jean Smith, June 15, 1905. She died in 1955.
Mr. Wygant was a blacksmith at Guys Mills for 28 years before moving to Meadville in 1927. From 1927 until he retired in 1937, he was employed as a boilermaker and blacksmith for the Erie Railroad.
Mr. Wygant was very active until recently and was honored at an open house event on his 90th birthday in 1962.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Cleora Steel of Franklin, Mrs. Jean Kerr of Titusville and Mrs. Elmer (Maxine) LeComte of Meadville; seven sons, Arthur L., Floyd S., Harold C., Walter A. and Edward C., all of Meadville, Gilbert F. of Linesville and James C. of St. Louis, MO; twenty-two grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A son, Lee died in 1953 and a son, Paul, was killed in France during World War II.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Union Cemetery, Guys Mills.
