Paul A. Knights

March 13, 1918 — July 19, 2001

Paul A. Knights, 83, of Meadow Street, Meadville, died Thursday, July 19, 2001 at Meadville Medical Center.

He was born in Herkimer, NY March 13, 1918 a son of Arthur H. and Elinor Crook Knights.  He married Ruth Elisabeth Williams June 24, 1954 and she survives.

In 1940 he graduated Cum Laude with an AB degree from Hobart College.  In 1941 he received his Masters degree in English Literature from Louisiana State University and in 1947 he received his PhD in American History from the University of Iowa.

In 1981 he retired as a Professor in the History Department of Allegheny College after 34 years of service.  He previously had taught at Louisiana State University, the University of Iowa and worked at the Remington Arms Co. of Ilion, NY.  He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Chi fraternities, the New York Historical Society, the Crawford County Historical Society, the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania and various scholarly organizations.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years and was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Joyce Tomlinson.

His body was donated to medical research and no services are planned.
