Paul D. “Pete” Shafer, Jr., 77, of Meadville, died Monday, June 9, 2008 at his residence following a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer.
He was born April 16, 1931 in New Haven, CT, a son of the late Paul D. and Imogene Gillespie Shafer. He married Caroline Sparks June 14, 1952 and she survives.
He was a 1952 graduate of Yale University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and a 1959 graduate of Georgetown University School of Law. He was an attorney at the Shafer Law Firm since 1959, retiring in 2005. He previously was Crawford County District Attorney for 8 years and was the former solicitor of the Meadville Area School District (now Crawford Central School District).
Pete was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War where he served aboard the Destroyer USS Remey. He was an active member of Stone United Methodist Church and served in various leadership capacities through the years.
He was a member of the Meadville Lions Club, Iroquois Club, The Country Club, Pennsylvania Bar Assn., Crawford County Bar Assn. and past president, Meadville Medical Center Board of Incorporators, Crawford County Hospital Authority, former member and past president of the former Meadville City Hospital Board of Directors, past president of the Conference of County Bar Association Leaders, former member of the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania Bas Assn., former school board member for 6 years of the Crawford Central School District, Life Fellow of the Pennsylvania and American Bar Foundations, member of Charles Stafford American Legion Post 111, Meadville Roundtable, and Beta Theta Pi Fraternity at Yale University.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Caroline of almost 56 years, include 4 children, David Shafer and his wife Kathy of Meadville; Anne Peacock and her husband Douglas of Meadville; Timothy Shafer and his wife Martha of Augusta, GA; and Susan Corbran and her husband Barry of Venango; 17 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lee Bobin of Peapack, NJ; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville. A memorial service will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Stone United Methodist Church, 956 S. Main St., Meadville with the Rev. John Spahr, Pastor of Stone United Methodist Church, Rev. William L. Brown, retired United Methodist Clergyman, and Rev. Dr. Terry Clark, Pastor of First Christian Church officiating.
Private interment will be in Greendale Cemetery.
