Peter (Pete) Kelyman, 83, of Meadville passed away Sunday morning, June 4, 2017 at UPMC Hamot in Erie following a short illness.
He was born July 11, 1933 in Meadville a son of Charles and Mary Sasala Kelyman. He married Norma Jean Lippert August 10, 1957 and she survives.
He was a 1951 graduate of Cambridge Spring High School and attended the Cleveland Engineering Institute, Cleveland, OH. In May of 1953 during the Korean War, he was drafted into the US Army, where he served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was honorable discharged in May of 1955. He was employed at the form Avtex Corp for 28 years as the Fire Chief. After the plant closed, he worked for the PA Department of Transportation as a line painter, retiring in 1999.
He was a life-time member of Vernon Central Hose Company and was the Fire Chief in the 1970’s. He also was a life-time member of the Conneaut Lake Park Vol. Fire Dept. Station #5 and a member of Huidekoper VFW Post #2006. He was a hunter and avid fisherman. He loved having fish fries. He also loved playing cards and watching the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Norma of almost 60 years, include: a daughter, Kathy Unice of Meadville; a son Mark Kelyman of Harmonsburg; a grandson, Connor Unice; a sister, Irene Smalley and her husband Gene of Girard; three sisters-in-law, Barbara, Jenny and Marilyn Kelyman and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Annabelle Dean, Helen Hornstein and Margaret Hriso and six brothers, John, Charles, George, Paul, Andrew and Joseph Kelyman.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home with military honors provided by Huidekoper VFW Post #2006.
The family suggests memorials be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
