Phyllis Heather Martin

Phyllis Heather Martin, 94, of Conneaut Lake, passed away peacefully Friday, August 22, 2014 at her daughter’s residence in Harmonsburg.  Throughout her years of struggling with Alzheimer’s disease, Phyllis remained pleasant and thankful.

She was born in Philadelphia on May 3, 1920, a daughter of Dr. Jerome and Hilda Turner Heather.  She married Dr. James W. Martin March 31, 1945 and he preceded her in death August 21, 1999.

Phyllis graduated from Wright Junior College, DePauw University and the Boston School of Occupational Therapy.  She was the director of occupational therapy at the Robert Breck Brigham Hospital, Boston, Mass. during and after World War II.

She was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Conneaut Lake.

Phyllis was a member of the school board and a very active member of the P.T.A. while her children were in school.  She and her mother, Hilda, were instrumental in the organization and cataloging of The Shontz Memorial Library in Conneaut Lake.  She owned and operated The Hobby Horse consignment shop and worked as a receptionist in her husband’s doctor’s office.  She enjoyed traveling to Briny Breezes, FL with Jim, playing bridge, and was an excellent seamstress who made beautiful articles of clothing, pillows and enjoyed other crafts.  She also enjoyed her church, study club, family and friends, and her dog, Lacey.

She is survived by her children, Bonnie Martin of Pittsburgh, Bill Martin and his wife Debbie of Conneaut Lake, and Nancy Coleman and her husband Harold of Harmonsburg; three grandsons, Jim Martin and his wife Tong of Pittsburgh, Ben Martin of Conneaut Lake, and Keith Coleman of West Palm Beach, FL; a great-granddaughter, Della Martin; her cousin, Gine Lancaster of Lancaster, PA; her half-sister, Gail Heather-Greener of Texas; a step-grandson, Hal Coleman; a step-granddaughter, JoJo Crandall; a step-great-granddaughter, Reese Crandall, all of Punta Gorda, FL; two nieces; and a nephew.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, James W. Martin, III and a brother, Major William J. Heather, killed in World War II.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Waid-Coleman Funeral Home, 12422 Conneaut Lake Rd., Conneaut Lake where the funeral service will follow at 5:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dave Brumagin officiating.

Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

The family suggests memorials be made in Phyllis’s memory to The Shontz Memorial Library, P.O. Box 5117, The Conneaut Lake Historical Society, P.O. Box 425, or The Presbyterian Church of Conneaut Lake, P.O. Box 150, all of Conneaut Lake, PA 16316.
