R. Daniel "Big Dan" Cassida

R. Daniel “Big Dan” Cassida, Sandy Lake, Pa, passed away at 3:09 PM, Sunday, May 9, 2021 in UPMC/Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was 56. Born in Aliquippa, Pa, September 24, 1964, he was the son of Robert F. and Patricia J. Briney Cassida. Dan was a 1982 graduate of Lakeview High School and then graduated from Aeronautical School in Oklahoma. Following school, he had worked at the Grove City Airport and also earned his private pilot’s license. He also worked 18 years for Veolia Water Company where he maintained municipal water and waste water treatment plants at various locations. He was currently employed by the Parker-Lord Company of Saegertown as a plant operator. Dan was a dedicated-longtime volunteer firemen and was a life member of the Sandy Lake Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company where he held many administrative and line officer positions over the years. He was a mentor and father figure to many of the younger firemen and in later years was always seen driving the tanker. In earlier years he was also a member of the Sheakleyville Volunteer Fire Company. Dan was a huge drag racing fan and followed the NHRA sanctioned events. He enjoyed running RC Cars and camping and especially enjoyed spending his time with family. He was known as a gentle man and had great compassion for others. His wife, the former Sonia K. Fair, whom he married June 10, 2017, survives at home. Also surviving are five sons: Phillip Cassida, Frank Jovenall III, Jonathan (Jessica) Jovenall, Zachery Jovenall and Walker Coast, all of Sandy Lake, a grandson Jean Paul Cassida, Tennessee and a soon to be born granddaughter Jovenall. A sister Teri E. (Eric) Ligo, Fredonia, Pa, a special niece and nephew Carlin and Carson Ligo along with many other loving family members. Dan was preceded in death by his mother Patricia J. Gravatt and his father Robert and his wife Jean. Memorial Contributions may be made to Sandy Lake Vol. Fire & Rescue Co., P.O. Box 684, Sandy Lake, PA 16145 Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Rose and Black Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 99 Franklin Street, Stoneboro, where family and friends are welcome from 2 – 4 & 6 – 8 PM, Wednesday, (5-12-21). Funeral Service: 11:00 AM, Thursday (5-13-21) in the funeral home with Rev. Mark Frailey, Pastor Coolspring Presbyterian Church, Officiating.
