Rachel Alegra Griffin

August 17, 1932 — March 18, 2024

Rachel Alegra Griffin, 91, of Sandy Lake passed away at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh after a brief illness.

Rachel was born on August 17, 1932 in Sandy Lake to the late Charles V. and Violette W. (Ellis) Haun.

Rachel was a woman of many talents. She graduated from Thiel College with a degree in both Accounting and Art.  She had her own accounting business in Sandy Lake until 1990 when she sold it and was able to pursue her passion of art.  She traveled across the US and Europe with her camera in hand, always looking for the next picture to paint.  She rarely would purchase a greeting card, but would rather paint one to send to a friend or family member for that special occasion.  Many of her trips were combined with art classes.  She did portrait classes in the Carolinas and Ohio.  She took water color classes on Mackinac Island. She also became a Bob Ross certified instructor, and attended several workshops that he taught. She was a member of the Hoyt Art Center and the Butler Institute of American Art.  Several of her paintings were accepted and hung in national and local art shows where she received multiple awards. In her spare time she also enjoyed bowling and spending time outside gardening and mowing her yard.

Rachel is survived by her children: J. Michael (Donna) Griffin, Terry Griffin, Gary (Phoung) Griffin, Stephen Griffin, Duane (Donna) Griffin, Darryl (Carol) Griffin; her siblings, Rebecca (Joe) Barclay, Fred (Alice) Haun; a sister-in-law, Julianne Haun; 13 Grandchildren, 17 Great-Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Rachel was preceded in death by her husband, James Willard Griffin, her son, Mark David Griffin, her daughter, Dawn Elaine Griffin and her brother, Larry Asher Haun.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Rose and Black Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 3236 S. Main Street, SANDY LAKE where family and friends are welcome on Friday, March 22, 2024 from 1PM-3PM, with a service to follow at 3PM.
