Raymond Ernest Smith

Raymond Ernest Smith, 81, who served as a Republican state senator from the county from 1914 to 1918, died at Sunday, December 27, 1959, at Spencer Hospital after an illness of three days.  He had been hospitalized two days.  He made his home in Guys Mills near Mt. Hope.

A Randolph Township farmer most of his life, the former senator served in various capacities as a township official.  He was a member of the school board for 10 years and township auditor from 1911 to 1926.

Educated in rural schools in the county and at Edinboro State Normal School, he interrupted his studies at Allegheny College to enlist for the Spanish American War.

Smith was born in Randolph Township, August 15, 1878, a son of Hiram C. and Sarah Jane Wycoff Smith.  He was a member of Mt. Hope Methodist Church, a charter and honorary member of Mt. Hope Grange, a member of Shenango Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution and Walter Wilson Camp of the Spanish United War Veterans.

During World War II he was a member of Selective Service Board No. 1 from 1941 to 1945.  He was a past official of the Crawford County Telephone Co. and was president of Crawford-Venango Dairymen's Assn. in 1926.

He was married to Sylvia Lupher December 2, 1959, and previously was married to Caroline Graham, who died in February of 1955, and Maude Foulk, who died in January of 1959.

Besides his widow, he is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Lorena S. Smith of Harmon-on-Hudson, NY, Mrs. Mable Foulk of Cambridge Springs, Mrs. John E. (Nellie) Donnell of Cochranton, Mrs. Clemmons J. (Beulah) Schroer of Tiffin, OH and Mrs. Russell W. (Beatrice) Mook of Cochranton; a sister, Mrs. E. O. Golden of Kittanning; a brother, Larue F. of St. Petersburg, FL; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
