Raymond W. Hayes

February 2, 1910 — January 25, 1991

Raymond W. Hayes, 80, a retired math and chemistry teacher who worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II, died at Wesbury United Methodist Community, Friday, January 25, 1991, after an illness of six months.  He had been a resident of Wesbury since December 19, 1990, and formerly was of Erie.

He was born in Erie, February 2, 1910, a son of Edward H. and Julia Harrington Hayes.  He married Helen Zuck, February 12, 1954.  She survives.

He was a math and chemistry teacher in the Millcreek School District, retiring in 1972; was a graduate of the Univesity of Pittsburgh; and did his post-graduate work at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute.  He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Erie.

Hayes was a veteran of World War II, serving with the US Army.  During his years in service, he worked for Dr. Robert Oppenheimer on the Manhatten Project.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Edward H. Hayes of Lakeland, FL and Erie; a nephew, a niece and a great niece.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Fairview Cemetery.
