Reed McCaskey, 96, formerly of Meadville and a current resident of Springhill Retirement Community, Erie, passed away there Wednesday, August 14, 2013.
He was born October 18, 1916 in New Castle, a son of Harry E. and Margaret Reed McCaskey. He married Virginia Marie Schrubb November 29, 1947 and she preceded him in death September 27, 1983. He subsequently married June E. Broms November 24, 1984 and she preceded him in death December 4, 2006.
Reed was a graduate of New Castle High School and attended Westminster College. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945 in the European Theater of Operations. His duties included capturing the historic war events by photograph. He was employed as a photographer at the Meadville Tribune for over 30 years and subsequently as a self-employed photographer for 10 years. Reed was well known for his many photos of area landmarks which have been published and are on display around the Meadville community.
He was a member of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church and a former member of the Meadville Country Club and Meadville Elks Lodge 219. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Sun City, AZ and Ormond Beach, FL.
Survivors include two sons, John R. McCaskey and his wife Diann of Meadville and Thomas G. McCaskey of Chicago, IL; a step-daughter, Marjorie B. Waddell and her husband Charles of Asheville, NC; three grandchildren, Stephen McCaskey, Kimberly Lee, and Kristen Rice; two step-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Andrew Waddell; four great-grandchildren, Spencer and Sydney Lee and Jillian and Collin Rice; and a sister-in-law, Melinda S. Schryver of Stephens City, VA.
In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert R. McCaskey; a stepson, Edward J. Broms, Jr.; and two sisters, Ruth R. Crawford and Margaret M. Alexander.
A private family viewing will be held at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Agatha Church, 353 Pine St., Meadville with Fr. Matthew Kujawinski as Celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Agatha Cemetery.
