Rev. Harry L. Stoll

August 27, 1930 — July 6, 2019

Rev. Harry L. Stoll, 88, of Meadville and a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Community died there Saturday, July 6, 2019.

He was born in East Chicago, IN August 27, 1930 a son of Lloyd and Doris Vaux Stoll.  He married Margaret (Margot) Hagans July 23, 1960 and she survives.

He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in East Chicago, IN and received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN in 1952.  He was a life member of the Indiana University Alumni Association and Alpha Kappa Psi (Business Fraternity) and Kappa Kappa Psi (Band Fraternity).  Upon graduation, he worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Akron, OH; then served as Chief Clerk in the Syracuse, NY office from 1955-1958.  He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the US Army from 1953-1955.  He attended Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. and received Master of Divinity degree in 1961.

He was ordained as a probationer in the Central New York Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1959 and then Elder in full connection in 1961.  As a student he served as Assistant Minister at St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Washington, DC.  Upon graduation, he served the following United Methodist appointments in the Central and North Central New York Conferences: Associate Minister First Methodist Church, Cortland 1961-1964; Associate Minister West Genesee Church, Syracuse 1964-1966; Pastor of Weedsport/Brick Church 1966-1969; First UMC, Homer 1969-1974; Sodus United Third Methodist Church 1974-1983; First UMC Chittenango 1983-1985; Grace UMC, Corning 1985-1988 and First UMC, Ilion 1988-1993.  As a consecrated Minister of Education in the United Methodist Church, he served in the older elementary camping ministry at Casowasco as a volunteer camp director for 27 years.  He was also a member of the Camps, Conferences and Retreat Ministries Board and served as Chairman for several years.

He and Margot moved to the Wesbury community here in Meadville in 1993 and he served as President of the Thoburn Village Association.  He was a member of the Meadville Rotary Club, was a Rotarian in every community he lived and was a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow.  He was a member of the American Philatelic Society, Cussewago Lodge #108 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) and presently a member of Fallowfield Lodge #1128.  He served as President and then Secretary of the Odd Fellows Home of Western Pennsylvania Board of Directors and as District Deputy Grand Master of District #27 of the IOOF of Pennsylvania.  He attended Stone United Methodist Church and sang in its choir for 22 years.  He enjoyed traveling and visiting the Chautauqua Institute in the summers.

Survivors, in addition to his wife Margot of 58 years, include: a son, Brian L. Stoll of Elmyra, NY; a sister, Doris Surowiec of Lowell, IN and nieces nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, July 23rd from 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. in the Barco Chapel of Wesbury United Methodist Community, 31 N. Park Avenue, Meadville.  The memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel with Revs. Sam Marchetta and Jane Ellen Nickell, officiating.

Interment with military honors provided by Huidekoper VFW Post #2006 will be in Greendale Cemetery.
