Rev. Herbert E. Boyd, 90, a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community, Meadville, since March 1982, died there Sunday January 6, 2002, following a period of declining health.
He was born in Volant, Lawrence Co., PA November 5, 1911, a son of Boyne F. & Phyllis Pearson Boyd. He married Roberta O. Bennett, January 15, 1935, and she survives.
He was a l930 graduate of New Castle High School, a 1934 graduate of Taylor University, Upland, IN and a l938 graduate of Garrett Theological School, Evanston, IL. He was an ordained Clergyman in the Western Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church, having served United Methodist Churches at East Kane, Hazelcrest, Ashburn, Clarks Mills, Punxsutawney Grace, Sandy Lake, Albion, Meadville Grace, and Sharpsville, then as the resident director of Olmsted Manor, Ludlow, a Methodist Retreat Center, retiring in 1976. In retirement he served as pastor of Titusville Bethel until l981 and for 7 summers he and his wife Roberta served as Host and Hostess at the Methodist House at the Chautauqua Institute, Chautauqua, NY. He had served on numerous agencies and boards in the Western Pennsylvania Conference including conference secretary for 12 years. His community activities included a charter member of the Sandy Lake Rotary Club, a member and secretary for 6 years of the Albion Lions Club, Director of the Albion Fair, Chairman of the Western Crawford County Red Cross, and an honorary member of the Albion Fire Dept.
He had been active in the Boy Scout program first as a scout having earned 65 merit badges, and later as a scout leader, the Board of Directors of the Washington Trail Council of Erie-Crawford Counties, and minister and counselor for the God and Country Award.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Chaplain in the U. S. Army from 1942 to 1946, in the Asia-Pacific Theater.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 66 years, include a daughter, Margaret Palinosky and her husband, Steven of Owego, NY; three sons, Boyne F. Boyd and Alan C. Boyd both of Kane, and Dan R. Boyd of Gaston, IN; three grandchildren, Susan Janifer, Amy Palinosky and Steven Palinosky; three brothers, Ralph D. Boyd of Enterprise, OR, Robert M. Boyd of Denver, CO, and B. Edward Boyd of New Castle, PA.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Anderson, and Martha Roberts, and two brothers, Jack P. Boyd and Dick I. Boyd.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut St., Meadville and Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. at Stone United Methodist Church, 956 S. Main St., Meadville The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with Rev. Edward Boyd, Brother and Rev. Gerald H. Murphy, Retired United Methodist Clergyman, officiating.
Burial will be in Westfield Cemetery, Westfield, NY.
