Richard A. Oakes

March 26, 1941 — May 21, 2017

Richard A. (Dick) Oakes, 76, formerly of Guys Mills, and a resident of Jamestown, PA died Sunday, May 21, 2017 at UPMC-Hamot, Erie.

He was born in Meadville March 26, 1941 a son of Morris and Bernice J. Berkey Oakes.  He married Karin Williams January 20, 1962 and she survives.

He was a 1959 graduate of Cochranton High School and completed numerous insurance related courses through the years.  In 1965 he began his insurance career with American General Insurance where he worked for 15 years.  He then joined the Bush Insurance Agency and worked there for 16 years until he became the owner and operator of the Oaks Insurance Agency.

He was a Cub Scout leader for 7 years, youth baseball coach for 19 years and 15 year board member and past President of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.  He was a member of High Street Community Church, Argus Masonic Lodge #545, Canfield, OH, New Castle Consistory, member and past Monarch of Kismet Grotto and member and past President, Secretary and Treasurer of the Crawford County Association of Life Underwriters.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife Karin of 55 years, include: three sons, Keith Oakes and his wife Cheri of Southern Pines, NC, Todd Oakes and his wife Patty of Meadville and Gregory Oakes and his wife Elizabeth of Long Valley, NJ; two daughters, Tracy McMillan and her husband Doug of Evans City and Cheryl Ervin and her husband Patrick of Guys Mills; twelve grandchildren, Erin and her husband Justyn, Dustin and his wife Heather, Kenneth, Ruthanne, Karin and her husband Russell, Matthew and his wife Kelly, Jacob, Ryan, Craig, Ethan, Caroline and Eva; five great-grandchildren, AydaGrace, Clayton, Attley, Hannah, and Gabriel; a sister, Marilyn Lee Stallard of Saegertown; a brother, Gary E. Graham of Conneautville and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Calling hours will be Thursday, May 25th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the ROBERT W. WAID FUNERAL HOME, 581 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE with a Masonic service at 5:45 p.m.

The funeral service will be Friday, May 26th at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Ryan Austie, Pastor of High Street Community Church and the Rev. David Coddington, Pastor of the United Evangelical Free Church of Guys Mills, co-officiating.

Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
