Richard S. Curry, 76, of Meadville, passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday, October 22, 2018 surrounded by family.
He was born February 18, 1942 in Elizabeth, PA, a son of James and Dorothy Akerman Curry.
Richard was a graduate of Kent State University and had attended Allegheny College, Oxford University, Oxford, England, Yale University, Edinboro University, and the University of Mexico, Mexico City. In 1965, he received the Men’s Students Association Senior Service Award at Kent State University. In 2004, he received the Lauretta Woodson Award. He was presented by the PA State Education Association, the Great Teachers 2005 honoree in recognition of his commitment to teaching. He was recognized by Grand River Academy as outstanding teacher in 2006, receiving the Edmund E. Field Hall of Excellence award. Richard’s teaching career spanned 40 years. He taught at Grand River Academy, Austinburg, OH, General McLane High School, Edinboro, and then for 27 years at Meadville High School where he taught advanced placement English, accelerated literature, and theater.
A member of The Church of Jesus Christ, Kinsman, OH, Richard was a member and past president of the PA State Education Assoc. and former member of the Crawford Central School Board. He enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the world including to every state in the United States, Thailand, China, India, Germany, cruising the Mediterranean, Nile expedition, Mexico, Greece, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, The Netherlands, Iceland, Canary Islands, and Romania.
Survivors include two brothers, James R. Curry (Lori) of Franklin, IN and Timothy A. Curry (Sheila) of Emporium, PA; five nieces and nephews, Kate Curry, Kimberly Merichko, David Curry, Matthew Curry, and Todd Curry; seven great-nieces and great-nephews; and a former, well loved, sister-in-law, Nancy Curry.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Moss Curry.
Calling hours will be Friday, October 26th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the ROBERT W. WAID FUNERAL HOME, 581 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE.
The funeral service will be Saturday, October 27th at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ, 525 6th St., Monongahela, PA with the Rev. Zachary Jackson, Pastor of The Church of Jesus Christ, Kinsman, OH, officiating. Family and friends will be received from 10:30-11 a.m.
Richard will be laid to rest next to his parents at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, McKeesport.
