Richard D. Johnston

Richard D. Johnston of Meadville passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at the age of 98.

He was the son of Ben and Grace Smock Johnston and a lifelong resident of Meadville.  His wife of almost 66 years, Sarah Young Johnston, preceded him in death.

Richard was a 1938 graduate of Meadville High School.  In 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in World War II in the European Theater of Operations until the war ended in 1945.  He was a Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient.

He was employed at the American Viscose for 44 years.  He enjoyed working on wood projects in his garage, “making sawdust”, as he said.  Ever friendly and helpful to others, he will be remembered for his faith in Christ, his warmth and good humor, and his generosity.

He is survived by his son, Larry Johnston and wife Tina; his daughter, Cheryl and husband Ken Hart; five grandchildren, Eric Johnston and wife Brianne, Alexis Stevens and husband John, Abigail Regan and husband Bob, Luke Hart and wife Cathy and Lydia Hart; thirteen great-grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and a sister, Marjorie Sherrod.

Calling hours will be Friday, May 24th from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday, May 25th from 10-11 a.m. at the ROBERT W. WAID FUNERAL HOME, 581 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE.

The funeral service will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Gerald Walton, Pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens with military honors.

Memorials may be made in his honor to First Baptist Church, 353 Chestnut St., Meadville, PA 16335 where he was a member for 50 years.
