Richard Decatur Fellows

August 29, 1915 — April 30, 1997

Richard Decatur Fellows, 81, of Meadville, died Wednesday, April 30, 1997 at his residence following a sudden illness.

He was born August 29, 1915 in Spokane, WA, a son of the late Arthur Morey and Cora Phillips Fellows.  He married Betty Jane Krieger, July 7, 1944.  She preceded him in death July 2, 1983.   He subsequently married Alyce Marshall Pella September 4, 1993.  She survives.

Mr. Fellows attended Beloit College, Beloit, WI from 1935-36; he then graduated from the industrial engineering program at the General Motors Institute in 1939.  He worked for 25 years as an engineer for General Motors following his graduation.  He subsequently worked as a quality control engineer at ABEX Corp. for 15 years and for 5 years at C&J Industries.

He was a US Navy Veteran of WWII serving as a diving officer aboard the USS Spadefish.  He was honorably discharged in 1945 as Lieutenant.  He was very active with the WWII Submarine Veterans and had been very active at one tome with the Boy Scouts of America, having received the Silver Beaver Award for his service.  He had been chairman of the Red Coats at Meadville Medical Center.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Meadville Noontime Kiwanis Club and the Cambridge Springs American Legion Post #381.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Mark Decatur Fellows (Sandy) of San Diego, CA; a daughter, Laurie Jean Fellows Carlberg (Ted) of Strongsville, OH; two stepsons, Bernard Pella of Augusta, GA and Mark Pella of Vienna, VA; two step-daughters, Marie Pella of Augusta, GA and Lynn Gavars of Reading; two sisters, Virginia Dial of San Antonia, TX and Elizabeth Fellows of Silver Bay, MN; four grandchildren; and one step-granddaughter.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Robert Fellows and one sister, Helen Williams.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
