Richard E. Holden, 90, of 685 Thoburn Court, died Tuesday Sept. 24, 2002, at Wesbury United Methodist Community, after a short illness.
He was born in Shelbyville MO, May 22, 1912, a son of Frank B. & Leah Rimmer Holden. He married Carole Grace Irwin, and she preceded him in death.
He attended Allegheny College where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and graduated from the Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers University in 1949.
He was a veteran of World War II, with the U. S. Navy.
He spent 40 years in banking, retiring in 1977 as Executive vive-president of PennBank.
His civic and social involvement included Incorporator of the former Spencer Hospital, Treasurer of Greendale Cemetery Assn., Chairmen of the Meadville Parking Authority, Trustee of the Diocese of Erie (Episcopal), the Iroquois Boating & Fishing Club, Elks Lodge #219, U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, U. S. Power Squadron, and the Erie Yacht Club.
He was an avid sailor, and gardener, raising roses and other flowers, and supplying the Gazebo and Carole Grace Holden memorial gardens on the campus of Wesbury United Methodist Community, where he lived.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
Survivors include a brother Frank L. Holden and his wife Ernestine, of Saegertown, and 2 nephews. William and John Holden.
He was also preceded in death by a brother Alfred Holden, and his adopted son, Richard Holden.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday Sept. 30, 2002, at Christ Episcopal Church, 870 Diamond Square, with the Rev. Susan Buell, rector, officiating. Entombment will be in the church columbarium.
