Robert Harmon Unger

January 4, 1910 — September 22, 2011

Robert Harmon Unger, 101, a long-time Meadville resident and a more recent resident of North Chili and Rochester, NY, died at Highland Hospital, Rochester, Thursday, September 22, 2011 after a period of declining health.

He was born in Meadville January 4, 1910, a son of Rush John and Mary Elizabeth Curry Unger.  He married Rhea Virgilia Smith February 14, 1934 and she survives.

Bob graduated from Meadville High School in 1929, and attended Allegheny College for a brief period.  He retired from the Talon Engineering Department in 1973 after 40 years of service.  He had previously worked for the Erie Railroad and also owned and operated Unger’s Antique Shop on Pennsylvania Avenue in Kerrtown for many years.  During World War II, he served as a Minuteman with the Meadville Civil Defense effort.

Bob was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, a member and past president of the Talon Management Club, a member and past president of the Crawford County Antique Dealers Association, and a member of Cussewago Odd Fellows Lodge #108.

Survivors, in addition to his loving wife Virgilia of 77 years, include a daughter Mrs. Richard (Gayle) Kelley of Churchville, NY; 2 grandchildren, Melissa Kelley and Diane Mead and her husband, Dennis; 3 great-grandchildren, Elaine Elizabeth Mead, Teagan Kelley Mead, and McKenna Rhea Kelley-Knox; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Unger; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Alison (Tubby) Unger.

A Service of Memory will be held in the Chapel of Roselawn Memorial Gardens at 11:30 a.m., Monday, September 26, 2011 with Attorney William B. Moore, officiating.

Entombment will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
