Roberta (Bobbie) V. Oakes, 73, of Guys Mills, slipped away at home on Monday, June 29, 2015. Roberta, known by friends and family as Bobbie, was born July 26, 1941 in Meadville. She married Gerald (Jerry) G. Oakes, who she considered her best friend, on August 30, 1958 at the age of 17 and he survives. Bobbie managed the deli and bakery at County Market before she retired. She was a member of Mount Hope United Methodist Church and using her culinary skills she donated many dishes to the Ladies Aid at Mount Hope Church. She loved to make candy, birthday cakes, and numerous kinds of cookies, breads, and meals. She was always in search of a new recipe and a new ingredient to offer her baking and cooking dishes. Bobbie was happiest in the kitchen, and her cooking and baking was well known to friends and family. In addition to cooking and baking, Bobbie loved gardening. Each year through her picturesque garden she shared her harvest of tried-and-true new plants and she started many of her plants from seeds and was very interested in growing her plants organically. She also enjoyed frequent shopping and traveling trips with dear friends Roger and Alma Orr. Survivors, in addition to her loving husband Jerry of over 56 years, include two daughters, Susan Hyde and her husband Ken (Shawn) of Guys Mills and Sally Shutts and her husband Jim of Waterford; seven grandchildren, Jonathan Shutts and his wife Nicole, Margaret (Shutts) OBrien and her husband Joel, Emily Hyde, Calum Hyde, Tristan Hyde, Gillan Hyde, and Alex Hyde; a great-granddaughter, Bella Shutts; three brothers, Donnie, Alan, and Richard Messerall; a special sister-in-law, Joyce Tarr of Guys Mills; a brother-in-law, David Oakes and his wife Lenore of Oklahoma; Jeff Wright and Andrea Malinowski who Bobbie thought of as family; and nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville. The funeral and committal service will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Alice McClymonds officiating. The family is thankful for the love and support of Bobbies many friends. Bobbie was special to all who knew her for the food she made, her sense of humor, and most especially because she was thoughtful of others.
