Rodney C. "Hort" Downing

Rodney C. “Hort” Downing, 58 of Sandy Lake, passed away on May 12, 2020. Hort was born in Greenville on May 16, 1961 to the late Carl and Maxine (Kiser) Downing. He was a graduate of Lakeview High School and worked at Trinity Steel Car, Davey Tree, and Asplundh throughout his career. Hort enjoyed sports, especially baseball and softball. He played for the softball teams Tom & Jerry’s and JC’s. In his younger years he belonged to the Mercer Golf League. Most of all he was proud of being a dad and raising his sons, and then getting the honor to help raise his grandson. Hort is survived by his wife, Roberta “Bobbie” Downing at home, son Logan Downing of Sandy Lake, Dakota Downing and wife Kiamõné of Fort Hood, TX, grandson Walter Downing of Sandy Lake, and sister Karen Anderson and husband Bill of Louisville, OH. In addition to his parents, Hort was preceded in death by his brother Bill Downing and infant sister Carol Downing. Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to Black Funeral Home of Sandy Lake. A Celebration of Life Service will be announced at a later date. Hort was able to help others have life by being an organ donor through CORE. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Hort’s name to the Sandy Lake Fire Department, PO Box 684, Sandy Lake, PA 16145.
