Roger F. Caldwell

July 27, 1916 — September 14, 2002

Roger F. Caldwell, 86, of 11362 Williamson Rd., Meadville, died Saturday, September 14, 2002 at Wesbury United Methodist Community.

He was born July 27, 1916 in Lake Pleasant, PA a son of Ralph and Edna Knapp Caldwell.  He married Violet M. Mook August 18, 1937 and she survives.

He retired in 1984 as foreman of the engineering department of Avtex Fibers, Inc. after 45 years of service.  Previously, he had worked for General Electric in Erie and Talon in Meadville.

He was a 1935 graduate of Eustis High School, Eustis, FL.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, former Chairman of the church Board of Education and former church Deacon.  He also served on various boards of the American Baptist Convention.  He was a member of Gideon’s International and the Christian Layman’s Organization.  He was also a former member of the Meadville Recreation Authority and the Boy Scouts of America French Creek Council.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of 65 years, include three daughters, Nancy L. Mason and her husband William of Greenville, SC, Darlene A. Jones and her husband John of Frostburg, MD and Donna M. Cerne and her husband William of Meadville; a son, Daniel W. Caldwell and his wife Ethel of Peoria, AZ; three sisters, Marie Lee of Eustis, FL, Norma Bumb of Houston, TX and Hope Hodges of Eustis, FL; a brother, Ralph H. Caldwell of Arkansas; 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by two sisters, Phyllis McCall and Anita Barnado and a brother, Ronald Caldwell.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.

The funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Gregory Streed, Pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating and assisted by the Rev. William Mason, Son-in-law.

Burial will be in Greendale Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials be made to the First Baptist Church, 353 Chestnut St., Meadville or Gideon’s International, Crawford County Camp, P.O. Box 349, Meadville, PA 16335.
