Ruth A. Smith, 88, of Conneaut Lake, died Sunday, December 16, 2012 at UPMC-Hamot, Erie, PA.
She was born August 4, 1924 in Fredonia, ND a daughter of Emanuel and Christina Brosz Flag.
She was a 1942 graduate of Fredonia, ND High School and then taught school for one year. She then moved to San Diego and worked in a factory to support the war effort. It was in San Diego that she met her husband Wellington D. Smith who was stationed there in the U.S. Navy. They were married in San Diego July 5, 1945.
After the war they moved back to the Crawford County area and she worked at Talon in addition to helping her husband with the farm in the Blooming Valley area. She also obtained her real estate license and worked with the Ted Wilson Agency. She and her husband at one time also owned and operated the Dairy Isle on the corner of the Harmonsburg Road and Route 98. In 1965 she and her husband built and operated Smith’s Drive-In on Water Street in Conneaut Lake until 1972.
She attended Conneaut Lake Presbyterian Church and she supported several national organizations, including the Arbor Day Foundation and Veteran’s organizations. She was an avid reader and crossword puzzle worker and she enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.
Survivors, include a son, Laban E. Smith of Conneaut Lake; a daughter, Denise C. Paoli and her husband Lance of Haymarket, VA; four grandchildren, Dominic A. Paoli, Alexandra Ruth Paoli, Jeremiah P. Smith and his wife Jessica and Zachary D. Smith; a sister, Mae Hansted of Jamestown, ND; a brother, Benjamin Flag of Grand Folks, MT and several nieces.
In addition to her parents and husband Wellington, who died September 17, 1999, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Anne and Florence; a brother, Emanuel and a daughter-in-law, Kimberly L. Smith.
Services will be announced at a future date.
The family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 505 Poplar Street, Suite 310, Meadville, PA 16335.
