Ruth Myrtle Hazen Barr, 101, of Meadville, passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at AristaCare at Park Avenue.
She was born March 4, 1918 in Greenwood Township, Crawford County, a daughter of Raymond and Caroline Hecker Hazen. She married Harmer H. Barr April 29, 1944 and he preceded her in death December 11, 1981.
Ruth was a 1936 graduate of Sheakleyville High School and a 1939 graduate of Meadville Commercial College. She retired in 1982 following 40 years of service from what is now Citizens Bank.
Ruth was a member of First Presbyterian Church for over 65 years, having served as a deacon, member of the Presbyterian Women, bible study class and Peace circle. She was a member of the Meadville Medical Center Auxiliary and former board member, active volunteer in the hospital gift shop for 31 years, former member and officer of Mead Chapter Order of Eastern Star, former member of Order of Amaranth, former board member of Center for Family Services, and former member of the Meadville Lioness Club.
Ruth loved doing crafts, reading and traveling. She enjoyed doing things with her husband and friends. After Harmer’ death, she enjoyed doing things with and spending most holidays with her best friend, Janet Moffit and family. She and Jan were avid Pittsburgh Pirate fans.
In honor of Ruth’s 101st birthday on March 4, 2019, she was proud to have received from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives, a citation for contributing to the enrichment and betterment of succeeding generations for her many years of active community service.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen Barr of Meadville; a niece, Donna Smith (Howard/Mike) of Hadley and their daughter Marla Chess (Douglas) of Hadley and Marla’s and Doug’s sons, Nathan and Conner; Donna’s and Mike’s son, Bradley Smith (Kimberly) of Hadley and their children, Ami and Clayton; a great-niece, Pamela Scabilloni (John) of Pittsburgh and their children, Nicholas, William and Elizabeth; and a nephew, Thomas Hazen of Gaithersburg, MD.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Hazen (Dorothy) and Richard Hazen (Charlmina); a sister, Beryl Armour (Clayton); a niece, Susan Armour Garner Leax (Donald Leax); a nephew, George Hazen; and many friends.
Calling hours will be Monday, November 4th from 4-7 p.m. at the ROBERT W. WAID FUNERAL HOME, 581 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE.
The funeral service will be Tuesday, November 5th at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Brian Jensen, Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating.
Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Karen wishes to extend her appreciation to the wonderful staff at AristaCare at Park Avenue who helped care for her mother while she was a resident there. She couldn’t have asked for better care. Additionally, she wishes to thank Dr. Amy Miles and the Hospice staff for all they did for Ruth.
