Samuel S. Thurston

March 26, 1890 — April 24, 1975

Samuel S. Thurston, 85, of Saegertown, died at the Methodist Nursing Hospital on Thursday, April 24, 1975, after an illness of several months.

Born in Meadville, March 26, 1890, he was a son of Alic Thurston and Jessie Hill Thurston.  He married the former Thelma Bigler.

Mr. Thurston was a retired US Navy commander.  He was graduated from the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, in 1913 and served in WWI with the Atlantic and Mediterranean fleets.  In 1929, he was graduated from the Naval War College in Newport, RI, following which he made a three-year tour of China.  He served in the recruiting service of the Navy for several years before retiring in 1935.  He was recalled to active duty during WWII in 1942, serving with the Navy Bureau of Personnel in Washington, DC.  He again retired in 1946.  He was a member and past commander of the Charles N. Stafford Post, American Legion, and was a member of the Iroquois Club.

He is survived by his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Stephen (Elizabeth) Johnson of Virginia Beach, VA; two sisters, Miss Dorothy Thurston of Meadville and Mrs. Glenn (Adelaide) Sethman of Zephryrhills, FL; a brother, Frank F. of Punta Gorda, FL; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter and a brother.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
