Samuel Wrenne Bomar, 80, of 910 Annsley Circle, Meadville, since Dec. 2003, and a former resident of Sedona, AZ for the past 13 years, and previously of Lincolnshire, IL, died unexpectedly Sunday Feb. 15, 2004, at Meadville Medical Center.
He was born in Nashville, TN, Nov. 18, 1923, a son of the late Wrenne Thueatte & Frances Myrtle Petty Bomar. He was first married to Norma Jeanne Hupe, and subsequently married Alice K. Miller, Dec. 7, 1977, and she survives.
He had been a member of the oldest Boys Scout Troop in the United States in Nashville, TN. He was a graduate of Duncan Preparatory School of Nashville and was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity while attending Vanderbilt University.
He was a veteran of World War II, as a Lieutenant with the U. S. Navy in the Asia-Pacific Theatre of operations.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern Univ., Evanston, IL, having previously attended both Emory Univ. and Vanderbilt Univ.
He was first employed by National Starch & Chemical Co. and then its successor company, Unilever Corp., working in San Francisco, Memphis, and retiring as an Industrial Chemist in 1988, from their Chicago office.
He had been very involved in community activities, and had served as Secretary of the Sedona Kiwanis Club, and was a founding member of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Sedona. He was recently honored for outstanding community service with Sedona Recycles, Red Rock Pathways, the Big Park School P.T.A. as well as on the Recreation & Transportation Committee of Big Park Council.
He was a generous and caring man, a dedicated environmentalist, a staunch Democrat, an omnivorous reader, and will be remembered by the many who loved him as a “people person”.
Survivors in addition to his wife of 26 years, include 1 son, Christopher Bomar and his wife Inez of Montara, CA, and 2 daughters, Carol Herman and her husband William of Petaluma, CA, and Ann Plank and her husband Gary of Brisbane, CA, 5 step-sons, Thomas Miller and his wife Bonnie of Castle Rock, CO, Jed Miller and his wife Amara Geffen, of Meadville, Ben Miller and his wife Lurena of Lyn, Ontario, David Miller of Bellvue, CO, and Marc Miller of Nederland, CO, 1 sister, Sue Bartlett of Brentwood, TN, 9 grandchildren, Justin and Alyssa Bomar, Matthew, William, and Theresa Herman, Gregery & Benjamin Neveras, and Katherine & Christopher Plank, 9 step-grandchildren,Shanan, Seth, Satchi, Melissa, Colin, Pamela, & Josh Miller, Christopher & Steve Syfuhs, 1 great grandson, Grayson Neveras.
A sister, Katherine Hall, preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held in Sedona in early June.
Memorials may be made to the Sedona Unitarian Universalist Fellowship or the Sedona/Oak Creek Kiwanis Club, or a charity of the Donor’s choice.
