Sarah Smith Ferer

Sarah Smith Ferer, 94, of Meadville, died Monday, November 4, 2013 at the Marquette Hospice House.

She was born in Meadville September 5, 1919 a daughter of Homer and Hazel Boyle Smith.  She married Benjamin H. Ferer December 13, 1942 and he preceded her in death March 29, 1988.

She was a 1937 graduate of Meadville High School and attended Northern Virginia University.  She was a active member of St. Paul’s Reformed Church and served in many leadership positions.  She was a former member and Past President of the Alexandria (VA) Women’s Club and a former member and officer of the Meadville Women’s Club.  She was a former member of the Trinity White Shrine, the Alexandria (VA) School Board, the Crawford County Office of Aging and the Crawford County Home (now the Crawford County Care Center).  She was active with the Crawford County Republican Party and their candidates and was a Committee Woman of the Year a few years ago.  She enjoyed caring for her family, helping others and loved her neighborhood children.

Sarah is survived by five children, Dan Ferer and his wife Edith of Powhatan, VA, James Ferer and his wife Anne of Harwich, MA, Laura Mucci and her husband Steve of Sylvania, OH, Tom Ferer and his wife Diane of Port Charlotte, FL and Katy Mutlu and her husband Ike of Meadville; a sister, Kathryn Waterhout of St. Louis, MO; a brother, Charles W. Smith of Canoga Park, CA; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

A special thanks to her cousin, Elaine Barnes for her dedication to Sarah and special care for the family.  The family would also like to thank the wonderful nurses and staff at Hospice of Crawford County and the Marquette Hospice House.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell Smith and Arnold Smith and a sister, Alice Titley.

A private graveside service will be held in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

The family suggests memorials be made to St. Paul’s Reformed Church, 1070 Park Avenue, Meadville or Hospice of Crawford County, 464 Pine Street, Meadville, PA 16335.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville.
