Sarah Y. Johnston

March 16, 1921 — March 16, 2008

Sarah Y. Johnston, 87, of 499 North St., Meadville, died Sunday, March 16, 2008 at Meadville Medical Center following many years of declining health through which her loving Lord sustained her with cheerfulness and hope.  One of her favorite replies to health questions was, “today isn’t so good, but tomorrow will be better.”

She was born March 16, 1921 in Clearfield County, a daughter of the late Leslie and Alma Thurston Young.  She married Richard Dale Johnston April 3, 1942 at Kerrtown Chapel.  God blessed them with a very special love and devotion to each other which in turn blessed the lives of all who knew them.

She was a 1939 graduate of Meadville High School and then went to work in the lab at American Viscose.  Over the years, Sarah was active in service for her Lord.  She served as assistant secretary at First Baptist Church.  She also worked for Youth For Christ and had a real love and concern for all youth.  She was a member of First Baptist Church and its MCR class.

Sarah loved to sew and garden.  She had a ready wit and loved to have fun and make fun with others.  One of her great joys was planning nice things for those she loved.  She will be remembered by her grandchildren for her many good cookies.  All her family appreciated and counted on her earnest prayers on their behalf.

Survivors, in addition to her husband Dick of 65 years, include a son, Larry Johnston and his wife Tina of Meadville; a daughter, Cheryl Hart and her husband Ken of Sandwich, MA; 5 grandchildren, Eric and Alexis Johnston, Abigail Regan and her husband Bob, and Luke and Lydia Hart; 4 great-grandchildren, Seth, Caleb, Sarah, and Nehemiah Regan; a sister, Helen Puntel of Venice, FL; a brother-in-law, Dale Foulk of Guys Mills; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Sherrod and her husband Ken of Pickerington, OH; and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Ruth Foulk, Hazel Young, and Gladys Woods.

Sarah loved and trusted Jesus as her Savior from sin and the Lord of her life.  If she could have on wish, it would be that all who read this will trust him as well.  She is now Safe In The Arms of Jesus.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.

A funeral service will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Gerald Walton, Pastor of First Baptist Church officiating and assisted by the Rev. Ken Hart, son-in-law.

Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

The family suggests memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 353 Chestnut St., Meadville, PA 16335.
