Sherman L. Watson, M.D. formerly of Meadville, died Thursday, November 25, 2004 in Gig Harbor, Washington.
He was a native of New York State. He was born as the son of Lowell B. Watson and Ruth A. Watson in 1924. He graduated from High School in 1942. He joined the Army with the rank of Private and was subsequently discharged as a Private First Class. He married Evelyn Virginia Bailey, daughter of John H. Bailey Sr., M.D., in 1948 while attending Allegheny College. He subsequently enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was promoted the rank of Captain.
He moved with his family to Meadville, PA in 1953. He served in private medical practice, as the Crawford County Corner, as the Crawford County Physician, the Physician for the Ohio Rubber Company, and subsequently succeeded the late Crawford County Sheriff after his death.
In 1959, he moved his family to California to work in a variety of assignments for the Aerojet-General, Ford Motor Company, Kaiser Steel, and the McCellan Air Force Base. During this time, he pioneered drug and alcohol rehabilitation in these work places in addition to his required duties.
After his retirement, he served as a pioneer of video programming. His work was published in national and local programming. He cared for his wife, Evelyn Bailey-Watson from the onset of a series of cancer afflictions until her death in 2002.
He is survived by his son, Sherman, Jr.and his daughter-in-law Marci Watson of Sacramento, CA and his two grandsons Matthew and Joel, his daughter Ruth Hunter of University Place, WA and his granddaughters Amy Hunter and Lori Hunter and his grandson Brian Hunter.
On November 25, 2004 he joined in death his wife of 54 years, Evelyn Bailey-Watson, his brothers in law John H. Bailey, Jr. ,Robert Bailey, and Ralph Bailey, father-in-law John H. Bailey, Sr., M.D and his mother-in law Martha Bailey.
He will be buried in Greendale Cemetery, Meadville with his wife, Evelyn, and the Bailey family whom he loved so well. Services were held prior to his departure to Meadville and no further services will be held.
Local arrangements are under the direction of the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.
