Shirley J. Ghering, 77, of Stoneboro, PA, was called home to the Lord on December 24th, 2024. Shirley was born on January 13th 1947 to the late James “Abe” and Lucille “Tuckey” Snyder.
Shirley married the love of her life, Larry “Bo” Ghering on August 24th 1991.
Shirley worked in the custodial department at Polk Center for 31 years and had earned a supervisor position before her retirement. Her kids have fond memories of Shirley hosting a few residents at Christmas time providing a meal, small gifts to open, and the joy of the season to those who did not have family.
In earlier years, Shirley took great pride in showing her 1978 Rally Nova that she had purchased straight off the showroom floor. She would take her step-daughters to car shows and won numerous trophies and awards. She would later hand the car down to her daughter Wendy who was thrilled to own the car she learned to drive in. Just this past year, with the help of her nephew Dan Lusher, the car received the repairs needed to get back on the road. Wendy and her husband Jeff surprised Shirley by picking her up in the Nova and treating her and Bo to dinner. The joy on her face will never be forgotten and she would later tell people how much that meant to her. She was also an avid deer hunter learning from her dad and cherished her time in the woods with him and later with her husband. A few years ago she bought a John Deer Gator and loved riding around her property or venturing out the back roads to visit her brother Butch. She enjoyed trips to the casino, listening to a blues band, Friday night poker games with family, feeding the birds, and was always working on a puzzle. Fittingly, her final puzzle left unfinished was a cardinal which many feel is a visitor from heaven. More than anything, Shirley loved her family and would always end conversations with “Love you More”.
In addition to her beloved husband, Shirley is survived by her children, Wendy (Jeff) Weiss, Jeffrey Finch, Jessica (Ryan) Dovenberg, and Serena Ghering; her grandchildren, Tyler (Madison Hoskins) Weiss, Jeffrey Finch Jr, Jesse Finch, Tiffanie Finch, and Mason, Landon, Marina, and Evan (Evelyn) Dovenberg. She is also survived by her brother William “Butch” Snyder, her sister Linda (Jim) Lusher, one great-grandchild Zeke, her nieces and nephews, and her beloved dogs Gidget and Floyd.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her brother James Snyder Jr, a sister-in-law Linda Snyder, and niece Shelly Snyder.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Rose and Black Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., 99 Franklin Street, Stoneboro, PA, 16153. A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the convenience of her family.
