Shirley H. Irwin

Shirley H. Irwin, 89 (However, for the past 60 years she has told everyone that she was 29 years old and that she adopted everyone in her family because they are all older than her.), of Meadville died Thursday, January 20, 2022 at the Meadville Medical Center. She was born February 17, 1932 in Meadville a daughter of John and Myrtle Burge Hughes. She married the love of her life, Wallace K. (Wally) Irwin April 28, 1951 at Stone United Methodist Church and he preceded her in death last fall on October 29, 2021. She was a 1951 graduate of Meadville High School and worked in the cafeteria at the former Third District School and then in the cafeteria at Brooks Hall, Allegheny College. She was a life-long member of Bethany United Methodist Church. Shirley enjoyed knitting and crocheting and was part of the Knitting into Ministry with her daughter Debra, at Wesbury United Methodist Community. She also enjoyed travelling with her husband Wally as they visited all 50 states over the years. She is survived by four children, Sheree K. Yochum (Rodney) of Pleasantville, Susan Beck (Steve) of Titusville, Jeffrey Irwin (Memory) of Meadville and Timothy Irwin of Meadville; eleven grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews and her cat, Happy. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Cooper; son-in-law, William Cooper, grandson, Terry Yochum; great grandson, Kaden; sister, Ruth Ellis; infant brother, Arnold Hughes and her many other feline children. Calling hours will be Sunday, January 23, 2022 from 2-5 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville. The funeral service will be Monday, January 24, 2022 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Sarah Roncolato, officiating. Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, 140 Wadsworth Avenue, Meadville, PA 16335.
