Silas Arthur First

Silas Arthur First, 83, of Meadville, died at Mead Nursing Home, where he had been a patient two months, Friday, August 7, 1970, after a long illness.

He was born in Carlton, Crawford County, July 23, 1887, a son of George W. and Estella Reeder First.  He married the former Marguerite Crouch June 28, 1910.

Mr. First was employed for 30 years as a mail dispatcher at the Meadville Post Office, retiring in 1957.  In his earlier years, he worked in the Register and Recorder's office at the Crawford County Courthouse.

He was a 60-year member of Stone United Methodist Church.  Mr. First was a graduate of Meadville High School and Meadville Commercial College.

Surviving, in addition to his widow, are two daughters, Mrs. Walter D. (Margaret) Williams of Vernon Township and Mrs. Allen W. (Harriette) Baldwin of Poughkeepsie, NY; one son, David D. First of Meadville; one brother, Clarence W. First of Meadville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
