Stanley F. Hopkins, VMD, 76, of 21716 Kyla Dr., Saegertown, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at his residence surrounded by his loving family following a 7-month courageous battle with cancer.
He was born January 21, 1936 in Pleasantville, a son of the late Phillip and Helen Johnson Hopkins. He married Karen Hornstein January 2, 1988 and she survives.
Stan was a 1954 graduate of Titusville High School where he excelled in football, basketball, baseball, volleyball and track. He was a proud member of the Titusville Sports Hall of Fame, an accomplishment he shared with many including John Heisman. He was a 1958 graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a 1962 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. A dedicated and caring veterinarian of 50 years, he came to Meadville in 1963 and purchased the veterinary practice of Dr. Pease on North Street and renamed the practice Brookside Veterinary Clinic. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association.
Stan was very proud of his family and especially enjoyed time spent with them. He also enjoyed traveling. A devoted man of faith, he was a member of New Beginnings Church of God and formerly served for several years on the leadership team.
He was also very proud to have helped save the life of an individual who was struck by lightning at the Crawford County fair 40 years ago.
Survivors, in addition to his loving wife Karen of 24 years, include four children, Kimberly Turner and her husband Kevin of Guys Mills, Kristin Hopkins of Pittsburgh, Stanley Hopkins, Jr. and his wife Margaret of Snohomish, WA, and Stacey Joslin and her husband Paul of Saegertown; five grandchildren, Andrew Hopkins, Matthew Hopkins, Alexandria Joslin, Jordan Turner, and Kendra Turner; a great-grandchild expected; a sister, Janet Robyak and her husband Joseph of Sun City, AZ; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister and a stepson, David Davis.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville and Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at New Beginnings Church of God, 13226 Leslie Rd., Meadville. The funeral service will follow at the church at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Harold Ferraro officiating and assisted by the Rev. Temple Jarrell.
Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Harmonsburg.
