Stanley Joseph Gurney, Jr.

February 17, 1941 — March 11, 2022

Stanley Joseph Gurney, Jr., 81, of Meadville, died Friday, March 11, 2022 at Meadville Medical Center surrounded by his loving wife and daughter.

He was born in Pittsburgh on February 17, 1941, a son of Stanley Joseph and Ruth E. Kinsey Gurney, Sr.  He married Mary Lendick December 19, 1970.

Stan was a graduate of Marietta College, Marietta, OH and Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine.  He was a podiatrist in Meadville for 32 years and a member of American Podiatric Medical Association and past president of the N/W PA division.  A Diplomate of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, Fellow of the Academy of Ambulatory Foot and Ankle Surgery and a Diplomate of the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners.  He served on the executive board of the PA Podiatric Medical Association as well as being Secretary of the State Peer Review Association.  He was also employed by a national insurance company as a Podiatry advisor/peer reviewer.

Stan was active in the community as a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Meadville and Boy Scouts of America as Scout Master.  Being an avid outdoorsman with many interests, he was a member of the Conneaut Lake Yacht Club where he raced lightening sailboats here and on the U.S. southern circuit, Black Ash Sportsman Club, Trout Unlimited, Friends of the Upper Delaware River, and other conservation clubs that maintained clean rivers and streams.  Stan had a special place in his heart for fly-fishing, camping on riverbanks, and rowing his wooden drift boat he built by hand.  To capture his enjoyment of nature, he became a photographer, developing his own photos and taught many teens, including his daughter, to do the same.

Stan was known by many for his quick wit and humorous storytelling along with his love of Country and in particular, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  This led to friends calling him by his moniker “Stan Gurney USA.”  We will sorely miss his unique sense of humor and the many laughs we had together.

Stan was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his wife, Mary, of 51 years, he is survived by a daughter, Cara Gurney (Melissa) of Oakland, CA; his twin sister, Mary Lou Wilkins (Dan) of Reno, NV; a sister, Leanne Gurney O’Neal of Carmichael, CA; a grandson, Dylan Burnell Gurney; his mother-in-law, Madeline Lendick of Ellwood City; and many close, loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Adam Gurney.
