Stephen R. Moore, 65, of 736 Wesley Way, Meadville, died Thursday, August 30, 2007 at his residence following a courageous 3-year battle with brain cancer.
He was born January 19, 1942 in Kankakee, IL, a son of the late John and Florence Byron Moore. He married Judy Miller September 18, 1965.
Steve was a 1960 graduate of Cathedral Prep High School, Erie, attended John Carroll University, Cleveland, OH, and graduated from Gannon University, Erie with a Bachelor’s Degree in business. Additionally, he completed coursework at the University of Michigan Business School and the Advanced Management Course at Harvard University.
He began his career in the 1960s with Erie Insurance Company as a claims adjuster and subsequently as an independent insurance agent. He was employed by the former First National Bank from 1973 to 1992, beginning in Erie and subsequently Meadville, retiring from First National in 1992 as senior vice president. From 1992 to 1993 he worked as a senior vice president at Pennsylvania National Bank, Pottsville. Beginning in 1993 he was owner and president of the Moore Insurance Agency, Grove City and added the Titusville office in 1998.
He was a member of St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church and was a former member of the Army National Guard.
A community minded man throughout the years, he was a former member of the Erie Jaycees where he helped facilitate the Erie Junior Miss Pageant for several years, the March of Dimes where he walked from Erie to Meadville and back to Erie as a fundraising event, was a former member of the Lakeshore Country Club, Erie, Grove City Country Club, Meadville Country Club, and Iroquois Club. He was a former member of the Meadville Medical Center Board of Directors where he was actively involved in the merger of the former Spencer and City Hospitals. Additionally, he was a past president of the Meadville Area Chamber of Commerce and was a former member of the Meadville Elks Lodge and Grove City Rotary Club.
Steve enjoyed golfing, including golf trips to Ireland and Scotland, traveling, music and musical theater, was a long-time season ticket holder of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and an avid fan of the University of Pittsburgh football and basketball teams and Notre Dame University football.
He was very proud of his Irish heritage and initiated the “Irish Open” at the Meadville Country Club, a one club golf scramble played annually for the past 22 years.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Judy of 41 years, include a son, Michael E. Moore and his wife Corinna of Meadville and their 3 children, Ashley and Bradley Raun and Kylie Moore; a brother, John E. Moore and his wife Susan of Erie; 2 nieces, Courtney and Jillian Moore of Erie; and twin cousins, Jean and Joan of Illinois. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Moore and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edward and Ida Miller.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville with a Scripture Prayer service at 8:45 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 4 p.m. at St. Mary of Grace Church, 1085 Water St., Meadville with Fr. Richard J. Toohey as Celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Brigid Cemetery.
