Susan J. (Sue) Stanford, 83, of Meadville, passed away Friday, May 22, 2020 at her residence following a sudden illness.
She was born November 25, 1936 in Meadville, a daughter of James and Kathryn Weiser Hickernell. She had been married to William H. McWilliams and subsequently married Lee M. Stanford May 24, 1997.
Sue was a 1954 graduate of Randolph High School and a 1957 graduate of the Meadville City Hospital School of Nursing where she received her Registered Nurse’s degree. She worked as a registered nurse for Active Aging of Crawford County for over 20 years and had previously worked as a RN at Allegheny College’s Winslow Health Center and at Wesbury.
Sue was a member of the Church of Harmonial Fellowship and was a former member of Stone United Methodist Church and its choir for 35 years. She was a lifetime member of the Pioneer Gas and Steam Engine Society and member of the Tuesday morning music club.
Sue was a former member of the local Navy’s mother’s club, was a soloist at Navy mother’s state conventions for 10 years, enjoyed singing over the years including at various local churches, and enjoyed crocheting where she entered items at the Crawford County Fair and was in charge of the needlework department for 10 years.
Survivors, in addition to her husband Lee, include three sons, John McWilliams (Beth) of Baton Rouge, LA, Douglas McWilliams of Stoneboro, and Darrell, McWilliams of Guys Mills; three step-children, Cheryl Paloucci (Bill) of Nicholson, PA, Cynthia Swartzfager (Bruce) of Nicholson, and Jeff Stanford of Waterford; two brothers, Harmony Hickernell of Meadville and Donald Hickernell (Cindy) of Spartansburg; a sister, Kathryn Earle of Albany, OR; four grandchildren, Jessica Bair, Summer Collia, Brandon McWilliams and Kylie McWilliams; several step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, Zackery Zirkle, Alexus Bair, Abigail Stanford and Conor Robertson; several step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Bruce and Steven McWilliams and a brother, Gary Hickernell.
Calling hours will be Friday, May 29th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the ROBERT W. WAID FUNERAL HOME, 581 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE where strict CDC guidelines for the wearing of masks and social distancing will be followed. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Chris Martin, Pastor of the Church of Harmonial Fellowship, officiating.
Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
