Thelma M. Dewey

Thelma M. Dewey, 89, of 471 Hartz Ave., Meadville, died Thursday, May 26, 2005 at Meadville Medical Center following a short illness.

She was born April 5, 1916 in Castle Shannon, PA, a daughter of the late Ernest and Helen Patterson Spring.  She married Harlow F. Dewey and he preceded her in death.

She was a graduate of Commercial Business school in Pittsburgh.  She was the founder of Meadville Typewriter Service on North Street over 55 years ago.  She was the owner and operator of the business, which is now Dewey Office Supply on Chestnut Street, until selling it to her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Joan Dewey 20 years ago.  She remained active in the business for many years.  She was active with a local group of women in a doll society and she enjoyed ceramics and sewing.  She was formerly an active golfer at Oakland Beach Golf Course and was a former member and active golfer at the Meadville Country Club.

She was a member of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society.

Survivors include 2 sons, Richard Dewey and his wife Joan of Meadville and Robert Dewey and his wife Sue of Rohnert Park, CA; a sister, Doris Starry of Greenville; a brother, Ralph Spring and his wife Zona of Meadville; 5 grandchildren, Melissa Dewey, Rich Dewey, Robert Dewey, Kathy Dewey, and Lisa Smonski; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Dewey.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville with a scripture prayer service at 8:45 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church, 353 Pine St., Meadville with the Rev. Richard Allen as celebrant.

Interment will be in St. Agatha Cemetery.
