Thomas Malcolm Miller, 65, a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community since September 2005, died there Saturday, December 23, 2006 following a lengthy illness.
He was born January 1, 1941 in Meadville, a son of Clyde M. and Mary Ellen Steere Miller.
He was a 1958 graduate of Meadville High School and a 1963 graduate of Penn State University with a degree in Civil Engineering. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and Marine Corps. Reserves from 1959 to 1965. Tom was employed by the United States Forest Service throughout Washington, Oregon, and Utah where he worked as a civil engineer and land surveyor as well as dam inspections, fire fighting, avalanche testing and prevention, and chairlift weight inspections, retiring in 1998. In 1985, he was named surveyor of the year for the State of Oregon.
Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing, clam digging, crabbing, camping, canoeing, sailing, biking, skiing, hiking, and traveling with family and friends as well as photography and carpentry. When not working or doing outdoor activities, he could be found helping with Girl Scout or Boy Scout activities, attending kids’ music recitals, tinkering on vehicles, or showing someone how to build a wood project.
He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Congress of Surveying and Mapping, National Society of Professional Engineers including a former chapter president, and Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon including a former chapter president. His volunteer activities included being a member of the Environmental Association of Senior Involvement, the French Creek Project, the French Creek Valley Conservancy, and as a crew member of the Maritime Museum’s Brig Niagara for 2 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Pegi Hueller of Eads, CO; his father, Clyde M. Miller of Meadville; 2 brothers, Theodore (Ted) Miller and his wife Margy of Batavia, NY and Terrence (Terry) Miller and his wife Linda of Conneaut Lake; a granddaughter, Nytasha (Tasha) Hueller; his former wife, Gale Taylor Miller; his good and faithful friend, Joan Smallenberger of Meadville; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a son, David Thomas Miller.
The memorial service will be Sunday, December 31, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in McCracken Chapel, Cribbs Home of Wesbury United Methodist Community, 31 N. Park Avenue, Meadville with the Rev. Ellen Rezek, Chaplain, officiating.
The family suggests memorial be made to Wesbury United Methodist Community, 31 N. Park Avenue, Hospice of Crawford County, 448 Pine Street, or the French Creek Valley Conservancy, 297½ Chestnut Street, all of Meadville, PA 16335.
