Verlin E. Greathouse

September 16, 1918 — June 3, 2017

Verlin E. Greathouse, 98, of Meadville died at Wesbury United Methodist Community, Saturday, June 3, 2017 after a brief illness.

He was born in Markleysburg, PA September 16, 1918 a son of Ezekiel and Deborah Frazee Greathouse.  He married Gertrude M. Sutley August 23, 1941 and she preceded him in death August 29, 2009.  Verlin then made his home with his daughter and son-in-law at their home in Meadville.

Verlin was a veteran of World War II serving in the US Army in the Panama Canal region.  He worked as a welder for almost 40 years on the Erie, Erie-Lackawanna and Conrail Railroads until his retirement in 1980.  During the same time he also worked for Mowris Tree Service.  He was a member of the Meadville Club and a lifetime member of the Meadville Eagles Club #429.  He was a former member of the Railroad Bowling team and won several trophies.  Verlin enjoyed hunting, fishing, was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and enjoyed watching baseball and football.  He also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and word searches.  He was a hard worker all his life and a true gentleman, a member of the greatest generation.

Verlin is survived by a daughter, Nellie Mae Schauer and her husband Joseph of Meadville and Clayton, NY; two sisters, Pauline Webster of Guys Mills and Vesta (Betty) McLaren of Townville; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and his beloved “little buddy” Rascal.

In addition to his wife of 68 years and parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Forrest, Edgar, Harold and Floyd Greathouse and three sisters, Alta Armstrong, Lauretta Myers and an infant sister.

The family would like to thank Dr. Craig Godfrey for his many years of wonderful care of Verlin and for his kindness to the family.

Calling hour will be Wednesday from 1:30-3 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville.  The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Alice McClymonds, officiating.

Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Mt. Hope Cemetery Association, c/o Eileen Copeland, 29365 State Hwy 27, Guys Mills, PA 16327
