Miss Vernice Gelvin, 88, of Meadville, died this morning at the Ewing Convalescent Home.
She was born and spent the early part of her life in Western Crawford County, coming to Meadville in her early teens where she graduated from Allegheny College. She later graduated from Deaconess Training School, Brookline, MA, and Drelex Institute, Philadelphia.
After graduation, she went to Mexico City, Mexico, where she was appointed by the Methodist Board of Foreign Missions to be director of the industrial school for girls there, serving in the post for 10 years.
Upon her return to the US, she accepted the position as dietician at Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntington, where she remained until her retirement 18 years later. While at Huntington, she founded the Huntington Branch of American Assn. of University Women and upon leaving was granted a life membership.
She also was a member of the Meadville branch of the AAWU. She attended Stone Methodist Church and was a member of the Woman's Society for Christian Service of the church.
She is survived by one sister, Leeida Gelvin of Meadville.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
