Victor J. Tingler

February 4, 1872 — June 18, 1970

The Rev. Victor J. Tingler, 98, pastor of emeritus of the former St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church of Meadville, died Thursday, June 18, 1970, at Rosewood Manor, Galion, OH, where he had been a resident four years.

The Rev. Mr. Tingler was pastor of the local church from 1933 until retiring in January 1948.  He was succeeded by the present pastor, the Rev. William S. Brown.  He had served churches in Philadelphia, Norwood, OH, Buffalo and Sandusky, OH, before coming to Meadville.

He was born in Goerlitz, Silesia, February 4, 1872, a son of Joseph and Augusta Briere Tingler.  He was a graduate of the University of Leipzig, Germany, and was ordained a minister in 1892.  He came to this country in 1894.  He studied at the Eastern Theological Seminary of the Reformed Church, a branch of Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster.  In 1897, he was re-ordained a minister of the Reformed Church of the US.  He observed the 60th anniversary of his ordination in April 1957 in Meadville.

He married Katheryn Myers, a graduate of Millersville Normal School, on May 25, 1899.  The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Meadville in May 1949.  She died in 1952.

Following his retirement from St. Paul's he served as supply pastor for more than a year at Park Congregational Church, and subsequently supplied pastorates of several other area churches.

He was four times elected president of the St. Paul's classis and twice was its synodal president.  He was a member of Sandusky Masonic Lodge and Buffalo Consistory.

He moved to Crestline, OH, in 1961, to live with his only daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Margard, wife of the Rev. Werner L. Margard, now of Shelby, OH.

Also surviving are two grandchildren, Dr. W. L. Margard, Jr. of Columbus, OH and Mrs. Robert Reimsnyder of Shelby and five great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
