Virginia Belle Hurd, 92, a lifelong resident of Meadville passed away Friday, July 23, 2010 at Bowling Green Manor, Bowling Green, Ohio while under the care of Hospice.
She was born in Cambridge Springs, PA on April 24, 1918 a daughter of William Bell and Amy Flaugh Townley. She married William Kenneth Hurd on June 17, 1939 at Franklin Courthouse and he preceded her in death on June 24, 1986. She was a graduate of Meadville High School.
An active member at the First Baptist Church for many years, Virginia especially enjoyed the MCR (Make Christ Real) Sunday school class and their activities. She was also active in the Meadville Order of the Eastern Star.
Following retirement from her job as a cook at the Meadville Senior High School, Virginia volunteered her time cooking and working at the Meadville Community Soup Kitchen. She liked being able to help others. She enjoyed maintaining her own home and loved to garden, cook, talk on the phone and take care of her little dog, Brandy. She was also a master of the board game Tri-Ominos.
Virginia is survived by her loving daughter, Carole A. Matthews, of Bowling Green, OH and several nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania and Texas.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, William Townley.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 12-2 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Gerald Walton, Pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating.
Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
