Virginia K. Stevens, 99, formerly of Saegertown and a current resident of Wesbury United Methodist Community, since 2011, passed away there Thursday, November 14, 2019.
She was born February 13, 1920 in Franklin, a daughter of Lee Roy and Ada May Bird Rice. She married Lyle B. Stevens January 9, 1942 and he preceded her in death July 19, 2003.
Virginia was a 1938 graduate of Cochranton High School. She and Lyle owned and operated Stevensdell Farm near Cochranton for over 50 years. She was a homemaker and retired after 15 years from the former Spencer Hospital as a Central Processing Technician. Previously she had worked as a nurse’s aide at the former Meadville City Hospital and also worked at the J.C. Penney Company.
Virginia was a member of St. Brigid Church and former member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Cochranton where she was active in church activities including past member of the Ladies Guild. She was a former member of the St. Agatha Church Altar Rosary Society, Golden Echoes in Cochranton and the YWCA. Virginia was a past Democratic Committee woman for E. Fairfield Township for 26 years and former township auditor.
She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, swimming, playing cards, started painting pictures at the age of 91 and especially loved spending time with her family.
Survivors include three daughters, Brenda Heme of Meadville, Beverly Sackett (Gary) of Meadville and Lorraine Massung (David) of Meadville; a son, David Stevens (Delight) of Girard; five grandchildren, Mark Stevens (Jennifer), Todd Sackett (Bri Sheffer), Joseph Heme (Tammy), Anne Heme Robinson (Ernie) and Amanda Stevens Dillaman (Martin); a step-granddaughter, Mandy Hamilton (Brett); nine great-grandchildren, Jack and Patrick Stevens, Steven and Breanna Heme, Jordan, Bradley and Rachel Motter, and Eva and Max Dillaman; five step-great-grandchildren, Owen and Grace Hamilton, Arica Smaglik, Raymond Moritz and Bethany Shaw; five step-great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Nancy Wright (Lester) of Cochranton; two sisters-in-law, Fern Rice of Franklin and Colleen Rice of Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Lee Roy Rice, Jr., Gilbert Gerald Rice; Donald Rice and Charles (Red) Rice; a sister, Susan Chapin; a grandson, Bradley Heme; a son-in-law, Jerry J. Heme; and in-laws, Clair and Phyllis Stevens, Reed Stevens, and Dale and Eleanor Stevens.
Calling hours will be Sunday, November 17th from 1-5 p.m. at the ROBERT W. WAID FUNERAL HOME, 581 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE with a scripture prayer service at 4:45 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, November 18th at 10 a.m. at St. Brigid Church, 383 Arch St., Meadville with Fr. Jeffrey Lucas as Celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Hippolyte Cemetery.
