Wallace K. “Wally” Irwin, 90, of Meadville died Friday, October 29, 2021 at the Marquette Hospice House.
He was born September 23, 1931 in Meadville a son of Rollin Kay and Edna Mabel Williams Irwin. He married Shirley Hughes April 28, 1951 at Stone United Methodist Church and they enjoyed 70 years of marriage.
He was a 1949 graduate of Meadville High School and was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the Army National Guard from 1950-1952. He was a banker for 38 years of his working career starting with Merchant’s Bank, then Pennsylvania Bank and Trust, Integra Bank and retiring from National City. He continued his working career for another 30 years first with Attorney John Bozic, Jr. and then with R. Charles Thomas.
He was very civic minded and served the Meadville community in many ways. He was a board member of Wesbury United Methodist Community and was a recipient of its White Dove Award in 2015, served on the board of Corporators and Foundation of Meadville Medical Center, member of the Kiwanis Club of Meadville and enjoyed flipping pancakes at the Kiwanis booth at the Crawford County Fair for many years, Past-President of the United Way of Crawford County, former Treasurer of the Penn Lakes Girl Scout Council, former member of the Meadville Jaycees, lifetime member of Huidekoper VFW Post #2006, lifetime member of Vernon Grange, member of the Meadville Country Club and long-time member of Bethany United Methodist Church. He was also part of planning the reunion of his old unit, Heavy Mortar Co., 122th Infantry Regiment, here in Meadville for next summer.
He enjoyed bowling at the former Center Bowl, golfing, and eating at good restaurants. He especially enjoyed traveling and camping with his RV. He and his wife Shirley have traveled to all 50 states and several Canadian Provinces.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Shirley of 70 years, include: two daughters, Sherree K. Yochum (Rodney) of Pleasantville and Susan Beck (Steve) of Titusville; two sons, Jeffrey Irwin (Memory) of Meadville and Timothy Irwin of Meadville; eleven grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and his cat, Happy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Ann Cooper; a son-in-law, William J. Cooper; grandson, Terry K. Yochum; great grandson, Kaden; a brother, Richard J. Irwin and a sister, Lois M. Eldred.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at the Marquette Hospice House for the wonderful care given to Wally.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, November 2, 2021 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville.
The funeral service will be Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Sarah Roncolato, Pastor of Bethany United Methodist Church, officiating.
Interment with military honors provided by Huidekoper VFW Post #2006 will be in Greendale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, 140 Wadsworth Avenue, Meadville, PA 16335.
