Walter D. Lewis, 83, of Meadville, former Meadville High School principle, died Sunday, July 16, 1961, at his home following an illness of several years.
Mr. Lewis was principle of the old Market Street high school building from 1909 to 1913. He was graduated from Allegheny College in 1905. While in college, he was an outstanding athlete, particularly in basketball and earned the nickname "Chief."
He was principle of Cambridge Springs High School for two years, at DuBois for two years, and Plumville in Indiana County, for a year.
Mr. Lewis was born at Smicksburg, Indiana County, August 18, 1877, a son of John and Sarah Ellen Davis Lewis. He married Florence Wood of Meadville, May 31, 1906.
He operated a hardware store in Cambridge Springs for 21 years, retiring from business 15 years ago. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Covenant Masonic Lodge of Cambridge Springs, Coudersport Consistory and a former member of Meadville Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his widow; a son, the Rev. Clifford M. Lewis of Wheeling, WV and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Cambridge Cemetery.
