Walter A. Doane

September 17, 1854 — January 28, 1940

Walter A. Doane, 85, of Meadville, city engineer from 1893 to 1905, died Sunday at Meadville City Hospital.

One of the oldest member of the American Society of Civil Engineering, Mr. Doane began his engineering career at the age of 18.  He had been actively engaged in engineering and surveying until a week before his death.

He was widely known through active membership in the Masons and the Grange, among other organizations, and through the writing and publishing of two volumes of poetry during the last 10 years of his life.

On May 11, 1882, he married Harriett Louise Ellis, who died in 1926.

Surviving are four children, Norman D. Doane of Charlotte, NC, Miss Ethel Doane, Arthur W. and Morse E. Doane, all at home; a brother, Dr. L. L. Doane of Chicago; a sister, Mrs. Mae D. Washburn of Wellsboro, PA; a granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of Stone Methodist Church and the men's Bible class.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
