Walter Ryland Luther

Walter Ryland Luther, 90, of Meadville, passed away Monday, October 28, 2019 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 7, 1929 in White Cloud, MI, a son of Walter Henry Luther and Virginia Delaware Cannon. He married Naomi Andrews and subsequently married Susan Rhodes Lovell June 5, 1988 and she preceded him in death January 3, 2009. Walter grew up in Seaford, VA and joined the Navy in 1947 at the age of 19. He was a Veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars and saw the world serving aboard the USS Cabot, USS Antietam, USS Tarawa, USS Roosevelt and USS Vulcan. He was honor man of his company at Great Lakes, IL. He served 20 years active duty, 10 years inactive reserve duty and retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer. Walter later worked for Waltons Auto Supply and was a self-employed welder for many years. He was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church and VFW Post 2006, Meadville. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying gardening, hunting and cutting wood. Survivors include four children, Walter R. (Ron) Luther, Jr. (Karen) of Meadville, Virginia (Ginny) Hetrick of Meadville; Catherine Mihalko of Conneaut Lake, and Bill Luther (Michelle) of Hendersonville, TN; a step-son, Michael Lovell (Amy) of Milwaukee, WI; a step-daughter, Cathy Lovell of Australia; eight grandchildren, April Edwards (Chris) of Jacksonville, FL, Jamie Longo (Jason) of Meadville, Nathan Hetrick (Samantha) of Meadville, Corey Mihalko (Darling) of West Palm Beach, FL, Ashley Mihalko of West Palm Beach, FL; Trisha Katcher (Jorel) of Hendersonville, TN, Racheal Luther of Louisville, KY and Abigail Luther of Hendersonville, TN; step-grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren, Cambrie and Carlie Longo, Irulan Walker, Dawson Hetrick, Nina and Ellie Mihalko, and Kalel, River and Avienda Katcher. In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by a son, Nathan Luther and his step-father, Joseph Cannon. Calling hours will be Thursday, October 31st from 4-7 p.m. at WAID-COLEMAN FUNERAL HOME, 12422 CONNEAUT LAKE RD., CONNEAUT LAKE. The funeral service will be Friday, November 1st at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by VFW Post 2006.
