William A. Hayden, Sr., 91, formerly of Gravel Run Rd., Cambridge Springs and a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Community since November 2001, died Wednesday, November 5, 2003 at the Meadville Medical Center.
He was born in Pittsburgh, April 1, 1912 a son of Frank A. and Marie M. Redinger Hayden. He married Ruth V. Jones April 1, 1932 and she survives.
He retired as a furnace operator from Abex after 23 years of service and subsequently worked in maintenance at Colonel Crawford Park at Woodcock. He was a member of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church, served in the US Naval Reserves from 1928-1932 and he enjoyed farming.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 71 years, include: two daughters, Beverly J. Barickman and her husband Victor and Marie M. Leonhart and her husband Nevin both of Meadville; three sons, Ronald V. Hayden, Sr. and his wife Rosemary of Meadville, Richard L. Hayden of Guys Mills and Thomas Hayden and his wife Joyce of Meadville; two brothers, Robert Hayden of Pittsburgh and Ralph Hayden and his wife Ann of Waynesburg, PA; 20 grandchildren, one step grandchild, 18 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. He was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Hayden and William Hayden, Jr.; one daughter, Shirley Hayden; two sisters, Marie Tafanelli and Alice Deighan and one brother, Frank Hayden.
Calling hours will be Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut St., Meadville with a Prayer Vigil service at 2:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church, S. Main at Pine Street, Meadville with Rev. Gregory P. Passauer as Celebrant.
Burial will be in Townley Cemetery with military honors provided by Huidekoper VFW Post 2006.
The family suggests memorials be made to Wesbury United Methodist Community, 31 N. Park Avenue, Meadville, PA 16335.
