William Adolphus Clemons

July 29, 1877 — March 17, 1965

William Adolphus Clemons, 87, who had held several offices in East Mead Township died Wednesday, March 17, 1965, at the Methodist Home for the Aged, after a long illness.

In 1900, he helped build the Frenchtown School and was an East Mead school director from 1901 to 1907.

Mr. Clemons was born in East Mead Township, July 29, 1877, a son of William and Charlotte Gorton Clemons.  He attended Allegheny College and was a graduate of Slippery Rock State Normal School in 1899.  He taught for two years at Peirson School, West Mead, and at a school in Butler County.

He later became associated with his father in farming and building.  From 1933 to 1947 he traveled through 20 western counties as fire insurance inspector for the Pennsylvania Mutual Fire Insurance Inspection Bureau of Harrisburg.

For many years, he was a member of Wayland Baptist Church, but after moving to Meadville in 1945, he transferred his membership to Stone Methodist Church.

He and Mrs. Clemons, the former Ressie Hanks, whom he married in 1910, moved to the Methodist Home October 10, 1963.

Survivors, in addition to his widow, are two daughters, Miss Charlotte E. Clemons of Meadville and Mrs. Arthur R. (Marian) Kirk of Uhrichsville, OH; and a son, Walter H. of Moline, IL.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
